What a cool and pleasant evening
To be tied up and found leaning
Against the solid bark of a hardy oak
Sharing with a friend a hearty joke.
For this tale of random capture
May not droves of maids enrapture
But the night is not yet over
And we may yet find ourselves in clover.
So while we await a cunning plan
To be served us like a fruity flan
By the friendly hand of fate,
Let me for the moment pick your pate.
Thoughts away from you my goodly friend
Trust me, this detention soon will end!
And when these ropes we gnaw and bend
we'll flee like mice from a kitten's den!
Part II: Sir Bastien
Oh, bard of many accomplished feats
You of haikus and limerick treats
Songs and poems and lyrics thrice dozen
Woodsworth's teacher and Byron's cousin
Exhalter and beater of war campaign drums
Minstrel to Kings and denizens of slums
Yodeller of mountains and hummer of tunes
cooler and fresher than old desert dunes
I thank you so for your cheerful habits
while we're tied like silly rabbits
that keep you happied, endless smiling
while those thugs continue piling
loads of roasted deer and quail
purchased wines from the finest sale
cheese and bread oh, these decadant Curs
all wrapped up in their warm night furs
While I a senseless blow struck down
and you a rhyming bard of much renown
interrupted in your creative rounds
by cries of 'Help me!' and other battle sounds
It's quite alright, I'm really fine
roped to a tree on my poor behind
Not for mine own amorous pleasure
or singing hymns without heeding measures
that unhappy nobles with hideous wives
would react like shaken beehives
But no, 'Say it as it is' and 'I must sing the truth'
while I mourn a poor lost tooth
That fell to the ground while I battled four
villans and thugs whom you yourself saw
While you slaved away at poetry and rhyme
which in combat can't be worth a dime
But be that as it may bard, good cheer!
And while those thugs do leer and jeer
To unknown crowds your efforts will endear
And we'll be freed, aye, have no fear!
